Looking for a solid day on the water without the crowds? Captain Chris Johnson and his crew at Reel C Charters have you covered with their private 4-hour inshore fishing experience right out of Belmar. This isn't your typical party boat situation – you're getting personalized attention and prime fishing spots that only locals know about. Whether you're a seasoned angler or someone who's never held a rod, this charter adapts to your skill level and keeps things fun. The waters off Belmar are loaded with action year-round, and Chris knows exactly where to put you on the fish. All your gear is handled, so just show up ready to fish and maybe bring a cooler for your catch.
This 4-hour window hits that sweet spot – long enough to get into some serious fishing but not so long that beginners feel overwhelmed. Captain Chris runs a tight operation, meaning you'll spend more time with lines in the water and less time figuring out what to do. The boat heads out to proven inshore spots where the structure holds fish consistently. You're looking at rocky bottoms, ledges, and areas where baitfish congregate – basically fish magnets that produce year after year. The vibe is relaxed but focused, perfect for small groups or families wanting quality time together. Chris provides all the tackle, bait, and local knowledge you need, plus he's genuinely passionate about putting people on fish. Expect hands-on instruction if you want it, or just enjoy the ride if you're already comfortable with your technique.
The beauty of inshore fishing around Belmar is the variety of techniques that work. You'll likely be bottom fishing with traditional rigs for sea bass, using live or cut bait depending on what's running. For striped bass, Chris might switch things up with jigs, live eels, or even topwater plugs if conditions are right. The gear is matched to what you're targeting – medium to heavy action rods that can handle everything from schoolie stripers to keeper fluke. Circle hooks are standard for most setups, which makes catch and release cleaner and keeps fish healthy. The captain reads the water and adjusts tactics based on tide, weather, and what the fish are doing that day. Structure fishing is big here – you'll be working around rocks, wrecks, and drop-offs where predators ambush baitfish. It's active fishing that keeps you engaged, not just sitting around waiting for something to happen.

Sea bass are the bread and butter of Belmar inshore fishing, and for good reason. These chunky bottom dwellers love structure and put up a respectable fight on lighter tackle. They typically run 1-3 pounds in these waters, with occasional larger fish pushing 4-5 pounds. Peak season runs from May through October, but you can find them year-round around deeper structure. What makes sea bass special is their reliability – when you find them, you usually find numbers. They're also excellent eating, with firm white meat that's hard to beat. The key is fishing tight to structure with small hooks and fresh bait.
Striped bass are the crown jewel of Northeast fishing, and Belmar's waters see good runs from spring through fall. These fish can range from schoolie size around 18-22 inches up to keeper-sized fish over 28 inches, with the occasional cow bass pushing 30-40 pounds. They're incredibly smart and can be finicky feeders, which makes landing a good striper feel like a real achievement. Peak action typically happens during the spring and fall migrations, but resident fish stick around through summer. Stripers are pure adrenaline – they make long runs, jump, and test your drag system. The fight alone makes them worth targeting, even if you're planning to release them.
Summer flounder, or fluke as locals call them, are the shape-shifters of the inshore world. These flatfish lie camouflaged on sandy bottoms, ambushing prey with lightning-fast strikes. They're active from May through September, with peak fishing in summer months when they're feeding heavily. What makes fluke exciting is their unpredictability – you might catch several small ones, then suddenly hook into a doormat pushing 5-8 pounds. They're also fantastic table fare, with delicate white meat that's perfect for grilling or frying. The trick is keeping your bait moving and working different depths until you dial in the bite.
Thresher sharks represent the wild card in Belmar's inshore waters. These incredible predators can show up when you least expect them, turning a routine bottom fishing trip into something special. Threshers are known for their distinctive long tail fin, which they use to stun schools of baitfish. They typically range from 50-150 pounds in these waters, though larger specimens are possible. Summer months offer the best shot at hooking one, especially when bait concentrations are high. Landing a thresher is a bucket list experience – they're powerful, acrobatic, and absolutely beautiful fish. Most anglers release them after a quick photo, knowing they've just tangled with one of the ocean's most

Black sea bass are reliable fighters that live around hard bottom structure like wrecks, reefs, and jetties. These dark-bodied fish average around 12 inches and 1-2 pounds, but keepers pushing 3-4 pounds aren't uncommon. They school up and are aggressive feeders, making them perfect for families since once you find them, the action stays steady. May through October is your best window when they're in our waters. What guests love is the steady action and fantastic eating - sea bass has sweet, firm white meat that's restaurant quality. They live right on the bottom in 20-80 feet of water around structure. These guys will eat almost anything, but squid and clams are money baits. Pro tip: once you hook one, keep your jig in the same spot - where there's one sea bass, there's usually a whole school waiting.

Striped bass are the backbone of Northeast fishing - those dark horizontal stripes make them unmistakable. Most fish we catch run 20-40 pounds, though they can push 70. These structure-loving fish hang around jetties, drop-offs, and anywhere current moves baitfish. They're year-round residents but spring and fall migrations bring the best action when they're feeding aggressively. What makes them special is the combination of strong fights and excellent table fare - sweet, flaky meat that's hard to beat. They prefer moving water and often feed near the surface during dawn and dusk. You'll find them in 10-60 feet of water around here. Best local tip: when you see birds working or bait flipping on the surface, get your line in the water fast. Live eels and bunker work great, but they'll hit artificials too when they're feeding.

Summer flounder, or "fluke" as we call them locally, are masters of disguise living flat on sandy bottoms with both eyes on one side. These ambush predators can change color to match the seafloor perfectly. Most run 15-20 inches, but we've seen doormat-sized fish pushing 26 pounds. They love sandy areas near structure - drop-offs, channels, and edges where current brings food. September through November is prime time when they're feeding heavily before heading offshore. What guests love is the challenge - you need to feel that subtle tap and set the hook before they spit the bait. The meat is absolutely fantastic, white and flaky. My tip: when you feel a bite, let them run with it for a few seconds before setting the hook. They grab prey sideways and need time to turn it around.

Thresher sharks are the real trophy fish out here - these powerful predators can hit 16 feet and 500+ pounds with that signature whip-like tail that's as long as their body. They cruise 40-50 miles offshore in depths up to 2,100 feet, preferring water temps around 60-70°F. Late spring through fall gives you the best shot at hooking one. What makes them special is that incredible fight - they'll burst at 30 mph and sometimes leap clear out of the water. The tail whip is so strong it hits 50 mph when stunning prey. For the best chance, look for bait balls where they're hunting and drift slowly around 2-4 knots. Use heavy tackle with 50-80 lb braid and remember - they've got small mouths despite their size, so don't go too big on the hooks.
